I usually draw out the subject(figure, building, flowers, etc) but with the pattern it is spontaneous, intuitive.
In this particular piece I had the white cloud, columns and some frames for where the patterns filled in.
Although geometric maze-like patterns I had to draw first before carving in.
the colours are my favourite.
